Kinda Like April Fools’ Jokes… But They Weren’t (Real Estate Edition)

By Brandi Nelson, REALTOR® – Century 21 Signature Real Estate
Every spring, as April Fools’ Day rolls around, I can’t help but look back at some of the wildest moments I’ve experienced in my career as a REALTOR® in central Iowa. These are the kinds of situations that make you do a double take and think, “Surely this can’t be real life?” But in real estate, truth is often stranger than fiction.
Here are just a few real-life stories that felt like April Fools’ jokes—but weren’t:
1. The Noah’s Ark Showings
Five cats, two birds, a llama that spit and a very aggressive dog who the seller refused to take out of the home for showings. The sellers wouldn’t budge, and the animals stayed for every single appointment. Needless to say, showings were… very memorable. 🦜

2. Full-Price, Cash Offer… Rejected Because of the Dog
Yep. My sellers wanted to turn down a full-price, cash offer because they hadn’t yet found a new home for their dog, Zeva. Don’t worry, Zeva came to live at my house the rest of her life and the deal was saved! 🐶
3. Raccoon in Residence
One vacant home turned out to be not so vacant—a very alive raccoon was trapped in a live trap in the basement, causing a bit of a surprise during a showing. Zero mention of critters on the seller disclosure or from the selling REALTOR. 🦝
4. The Sellers Who Just… Didn’t Move
Unfortunately, I seem to specialize in this one. From buyers’ agents calling during the final walk-through to say the house was still completely full, to a seller’s wife telling me the day before closing that she had “decided not to move,” I’ve seen it all. 🤷🏻♀️
5. When Emotions Boiled Over
Let’s just say it got a little physical. A seller refused to move out on time, and things escalated between them and the buyers in the front yard. Some shoving happened, voices were raised and police had to be called. Not your average closing day. 🚔
6. The Unofficial Moving Crew
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to help with the final load (or five) just to get a house empty in time or retrieve/deliver dishes that sellers left in the dishwasher. I wear a lot of hats, but “mover” was not on the original job description. 😉
7. The Mystery Room
One seller insisted I should be able to sell their home with a locked room that no one (including me) was allowed to see… and a mysterious (read: skunky) smell that filled the whole house. Nothing suspicious here, folks! 🪴
8. The Lock-In Special
Not to be outdone, a foreclosure property I showed had bedrooms with locks on the outside of the doors. The vibe? Less cozy family home, more “escape room meets horror movie.” We didn’t stick around that house for very long! 🔐
Real estate in central Iowa is full of surprises—and I’m here for all of them (even the bizarre ones).
Whether you’re buying, selling, or doing both at the same time, you deserve someone who’s seen it all and can still smile through all the chaos. It's my job and I LOVE it! ❤️🔥
📲 Have you thought about becoming an agent? I'd love to chat about the ins and outs of the business. I can't promise there won't be racoons or weird locked doors but I can promise that every day is a different adventure!
