National Moving Month: Tips for a Smooth Move in Central Iowa

May is National Moving Month, marking the start of the busiest season for home buying and selling. If you're planning a move—whether across town or to a new acreage in Central Iowa—it’s NEVER too early to start preparing.
As a REALTOR® specializing in helping buyers and sellers navigate the moving process, I know that a little planning goes a long way to keep your sanity. Here are my top tips for a smooth, organized, and stress-free move. (I mean, as much as possible anyway!) 😉
1. Start Planning Early
Waiting until the last minute can turn moving into a nightmare. A good rule of thumb is to start preparing at least 6-8 weeks in advance. Here’s where to begin:
✅ Create a moving checklist with key tasks and deadlines.
✅ Research and book a moving company (or line up a rental truck if you’re DIY-ing).
✅ Notify important parties (utilities, post office, subscriptions, Amazon) about your address change.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect opportunity to purge items you no longer need. Instead of packing everything, ask yourself:
- Have I used this in the last year? If not, donate or sell it!
- Is it worth moving? Heavy, bulky items may cost more to move than to replace.
- Will it fit in my new home? Measure furniture to ensure it works in your new space.
💥 Pro Tip: If you're selling your home, decluttering makes your space look bigger and more appealing to buyers!

3. Pack Smart & Label Everything
Packing doesn’t have to be chaotic. Use these strategies:
- Label boxes by room & content (and color-code if you want to get fancy).
- Pack an "Essentials Box" with items like toiletries, medications, chargers, and a change of clothes for each family member. Don't forget the pet's essentials too!
- Wrap breakables in towels or clothing to save on packing materials.
4. Make Moving Day Less Stressful
On the big day, keep things running smoothly with these tips:
🚚 Have a clear plan & clear path for movers or helpers.
📦 Set up one designated area for packed boxes to keep walkways clear.
🐶 Have a plan for kids and pets—moving day is easier without distractions!
💧 Stay hydrated and take breaks—especially in Iowa’s unpredictable spring weather.
5. Settling Into Your New Home
Once you're in, don’t rush to unpack everything at once. Start with the essentials:
🏡 Unpack the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms first.
🛠 Check that utilities and internet are working properly.
📍 Take time to explore your new neighborhood and meet your neighbors!
